History of Dhulikhel Nepal

According to an eyewitness, while capturing this place, Prithvi Narayan Shah had several difficulties. It took him more than six months to win this place. In 1820 B.S. Ghorkalis gained this place. Then Khadpu, Panauti, Banepa, Sanga, and Nala were conquered at the same time.

Dhulikhel's meaning in Nepal is "the place where tigers play". Dhulikhel was one of the domains of the Kingdom of Bhaktapur, on the eastern frontier of the old Mandala of Nepal. Dhulikhel is one of the last places annexed to Prithvi Narayan Shah's realm of Gorkha. Yogi NarahariNath writes about Prithvi Narayan Shah's challenge to conquer Dhulikhel in ItihasPrakash.

He writes: "Dhulikhel was proved hard to seize by Prithvi Narayan Shah. He was afraid of the local people's boldness. Despite fighting for six months, he could not conquer the location and had set up a fort on the top side of the hill. He remained there, training was provided and various forces were assembled. This frightened the surrounding folks and began to escape home. In Dhulikhel, there were just 50 families. Mahindra Sing Rai battled courageously. Prithivi Narayan Shah was thrilled when a soldier stabbed Mahindra Sing in his back and cloaked his spear to observe yet another defeat. He died there. Naamsing was also stabbed by Khukuri. Then the war finished and on Sunday, in B.S. 1820, Dhulikhel was won on Kartik 10. Khadpu and Panauti were conquered the next day, while Banepa, Sanga, and Nala were won in Kartik 14 Gurkhas. Until 1972, Kavrepalanchok's administrative center was in Chautara. It was then transferred to Banepa till B.S. 1980, then moved to Dhulikhel, a place which remained until now."
